How the Tip Calculator Works
Work out the tip and each person's share of the bill in four steps:

How much should I tip in the US?
At sit-down restaurants in the United States 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard: about 15% for average service, 18–20% for good service and more for excellent service. Bartenders, hairdressers and taxi or rideshare drivers are usually tipped 15–20% too.
How much do people tip in the UK and Europe?
Much less than in the US. In the UK 10–12.5% is usual at restaurants, and many add it to the bill as a discretionary service charge, so check before adding more. In most of continental Europe service is included in prices; rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is common.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides say the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total because it is the number on the receipt. The difference is small: on a $60 bill with 8% sales tax, 20% is $12.00 before tax and $12.96 after.
How is the tip calculated?
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, and each person pays total ÷ number of people. An $80 bill with an 18% tip is $14.40 in tip and $94.40 in total, or $23.60 each for four people.
What does round-up do?
It rounds each person's share up to the next whole amount, so $23.60 becomes $24.00. Everyone pays a round number and the extra goes to the tip.

Calculation:
Tip = $50 × 0.18 = $9
Total = $50 + $9 = $59
Result: Leave a $9 tip for a $59 total.
