What is a Map Scale Calculator?
A Map Scale Calculator is a online tool that converts distances measured on a map into real-world distances using a map scale ratio. It also works in reverse — given a known real-world distance, it calculates the corresponding measurement on the map.
Map scales are expressed as ratios such as 1:25,000, meaning one unit on the map equals 25,000 of the same units in reality. A measurement of 4 cm on a 1:25,000 map therefore represents 1,000 meters (1 km) on the ground.
This tool supports all common distance units — millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, and miles — and automatically selects the most readable output unit. We do not collect or store what you enter.

Drawing Scales Written in Inches and Feet
US site plans and architectural drawings state the scale as a length equation rather than a ratio. Convert both sides to the same unit to get the ratio: 1 in = 20 ft is 1 in = 240 in, so 1:240. Enter that ratio in the calculator.

How do I convert map distance to real distance?
Real distance = map distance × scale denominator. On a 1:24,000 US Geological Survey topo map, 1 inch = 24,000 in = 2,000 ft; on a 1:50,000 map, 1 cm = 50,000 cm = 500 m.
How do I find a map distance from a real distance?
Divide the real distance by the scale denominator, in the same unit. 3 km at 1:25,000 is 300,000 cm ÷ 25,000 = 12 cm on the map.
What are common map scales?
1:24,000 for USGS 7.5-minute topographic maps, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 for Ordnance Survey and most European topographic maps, and 1:1,000 to 1:2,500 for site and cadastral plans.
What does a large-scale map mean?
A large scale (small denominator such as 1:1,000) shows a small area in great detail; a small scale (1:1,000,000) shows a large area with less detail.
What scale formats can I enter?
1:25000, 1/25000 or 25000; commas are ignored, so 1:25,000 works too.
