How is land area calculated from coordinates?
With the shoelace (surveyor's) formula: Area = ½ |Σ (xᵢ yᵢ₊₁ − xᵢ₊₁ yᵢ)| over the corners in order. Corners at (0, 0), (100, 0), (100, 50), (0, 50) in feet give 5,000 sq ft.
How do I find the area of a triangular plot from its sides?
Heron's formula: s = (a + b + c) ÷ 2 and Area = √(s(s − a)(s − b)(s − c)). Sides of 300, 400 and 500 ft give 60,000 sq ft (1.38 acres).
Where do I get the coordinates?
From a survey plat, a GPS survey or GIS software. Enter them in order around the boundary, clockwise or counterclockwise, in the same unit.
How accurate is the result?
As accurate as the measurements. For legal descriptions and sales, use the area on a licensed surveyor's plat; tape and GPS measurements can be off by a few percent.
