What Makes a Good URL Slug
A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page: in example.com/blog/cold-brew-guide it is cold-brew-guide. People see it in search results, links and the address bar, so it should say what the page is about in a few plain words.

- Lowercase only. Paths can be case-sensitive on the server, so
/Cold-Brewand/cold-brewmay be two different pages. - Hyphens between words. Google recommends hyphens over underscores, which join words together.
- Plain letters and numbers. Spaces, quotes and symbols are percent-encoded in links (
%20,%26) and look broken when shared. - Short and stable. Leave out dates and words that will go out of date, such as “2026” in an evergreen guide, so the URL never has to change.

Slugs in WordPress, Shopify and Other CMSs
Most platforms create a slug from the title automatically, but they keep every word, so long titles give long URLs. WordPress shows the slug as the Permalink or URL field in the post settings; Shopify calls it the URL handle under search engine listing; Ghost, Webflow and Squarespace have a similar URL or slug field.
Edit the slug before you publish. Changing it later creates a new address, so set up a 301 redirect from the old URL, which WordPress and Shopify can do automatically when you tick the redirect option.
How to Use the Slug Generator

What is a URL slug?
The part of a URL that names a specific page, usually made from its title. In example.com/blog/best-coffee-grinders, the slug is best-coffee-grinders. A good slug is short, readable and describes the page.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google's URL guidelines recommend hyphens to separate words, because underscores join words together: best_coffee may be read as one word, bestcoffee, while best-coffee is read as two.
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance: three to five meaningful words, or roughly 60 characters at most, is a common guideline. There is no hard limit, but long slugs get cut off in search results and are harder to share.
Should I remove stop words like 'a', 'the' and 'of'?
Often, yes: how-to-choose-a-coffee-grinder becomes how-choose-coffee-grinder. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug hard to read, such as in the-who or to-be-or-not-to-be.
How are accented and special characters handled?
With accent removal on, letters are turned into plain ASCII: café becomes cafe, Straße becomes strasse and Ørsted becomes orsted. The & sign becomes and, apostrophes are dropped (don't → dont), and all other punctuation separates words.
Can a URL slug contain non-English characters?
Yes. Browsers and search engines support Unicode URLs, so café or münchen can stay as they are when you turn accent removal off. They are sent percent-encoded (caf%C3%A9) when copied, so plain ASCII slugs are easier to share.
Should I change the slug of a published page?
Only with care. A new slug is a new URL, so add a 301 redirect from the old one to keep links and rankings; otherwise visitors and search engines hit a 404 page.
